RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) – Simone Biles will try to make it 4 for 4 when the Olympic all-around champion competes on the balance beam finals at the Rio Games on Monday. World champion Allyson Felix goes for her fifth Olympic gold medal when she runs in the women’s 400-meter final.
Rio’s Day 10 of competition featuring action in boxing, cycling, marathon swimming, wrestling, began with Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland winning the women’s hammer throw gold medal with a world record of 82.29 meters.
Brazilian native Miriam Nagl has been chosen to hit the opening tee shot for women’s golf, at the Olympics for the first time since 1900 in France. On Sunday, Justin Rose won the first golfing gold medal since 1904 in St. Louis when he beat Henrik Stenson by two strokes on the Olympic course.
Biles, the 19-year-old gymnastics sensation, is looking to extend her dominance . Her three gold medals in Rio – from the team final, the all-around and the vault – are already the most by an American female gymnast during one Olympics.
She’s the reigning world champion on beam and posted the highest score during qualifying when she put up a 15.633. Biles’ biggest challenge will likely come from teammate Laurie Hernandez, who edged Biles during the Olympic Trials last month and scored 15.366 during qualifying.
The Olympic heavyweight boxing tournament concludes Monday and the main event of the 19-fight card is the gold-medal bout between Russian world champion Evgeny Tishchenko and Kazakhstan’s Vassilliy Levit. The winner joins an elite lineage of Olympic champions at the glamour weight, including George Foreman, Ray Mercer and three-time Cuban champs Felix Savon and Teofilo Stevenson.
Mark Cavendish , the winner of 30 stages in the Tour de France, tries to capture the Olympic medal that has long eluded him when he returns to the Rio velodrome for the omnium. Reigning gold medalist Lasse Norman Hansen of Denmark leads the six-discipline event at the midway point, but the British star is within striking distance.
Germany defeated the United States 2-1 in the women’s field hockey quarterfinals.
Other highlights from Day 10:
LONE RUSSIAN : The lone Russian track and field athlete at the Olympics has won her appeal to compete in Rio. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled early Monday that Darya Klishina is eligible to take part in Tuesday’s long jump qualifying because she has been based outside of Russia for the last three years and has been subjected to regular drug testing.
DUCKING OUT : The Oregon Ducks are taking a page from the New England Patriots, who halted practice last week to watch Nate Ebner compete in the Olympic rugby sevens tournament. Devon Allen, the Ducks football player who is competing in Rio, will make his Olympic debut later Monday when he runs in the opening heats of the 110-meter hurdles. The Ducks plan to take a break from practice to watch the wide receiver run his heat.
