Protect flag that stands for freedom

Mr. Trump tweeted: “Those who burn the flag, there must be consequences, perhaps loss of citizenship or a year in jail.”

We enjoy freedom in our country; with freedom also comes responsibility – how we enjoy the freedom. Some will argue flag-burning is constitutionally protected free speech, but there a difference between “speech” and “action.” Free speech is when I say, “I’m going to hit your nose.” Action is “when I hit your nose.” We cannot go around hitting anyone’s nose because we live in a free society.

Freedom in a liberal democracy is paradoxical. Everyone is free, but no one owns the freedom. The United States has taken a more diverse form than other societies. It has deep layers of insight from a variety of religions, ethnicities and cultures. It continues to be shaped by those who keep coming here from around the world. The U.S. may become the truest catholic vision of the world, having opened to a wide diversity of people. However, it is our responsibility to protect our flag that represents our precious freedom.
