Big Pharma, firms buy power
Why is it that the most powerful country on earth is again showing how powerless its government is against its moneyed minority? One would think that a government supposedly run by the people for the people, would govern in a manner that helps, not harms its citizens. It is disheartening to watch how high elected officials just act when told to do so by business lobbyists.
According to the Atlantic magazine; “For every dollar spent on lobbying by labor unions and public-interest groups together, large corporations and their associations now spend $34. Of the 100 organizations that spend the most on lobbying, 95 consistently represent business.” In 2015 lobbyists spent over 2 billion dollars influencing Senate and House votes. and Worse, lobbyists actually write laws and bills for their minions to pass (https://represent.us/action/5-facts-lobbyists/).
On soaring medical costs our do-nothing Congress’s response to astounding pharmaceutical price gouging is hearings where they rave and belittle big pharm CEOs and then, or course, do nothing to help Americans – forcing many into bankruptcy. Medical debt is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy, 72 percent of which had some type of personal health insurance.
