BERLIN (AP) – The cast of “Alone in Berlin” say the Nazi-era drama contains lessons for present-day Europe and its treatment of refugees.

Premiering at the Berlin Film Festival on Monday, it has Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson playing a German couple who risk their lives to oppose the Nazis after their son is killed in World War II.

Thompson said the idea of people turning their backs on those who need help and “not being able to say the truth, not being able to say what you really feel I think is very current at the moment.”

German actor Daniel Bruehl, who plays a Gestapo officer, said the film’s portrayal of resisting injustice is relevant “because in all of Europe, especially in this country, there is a movement to the right.”
