CALHOUN, Ga. – The Calhoun High School boys’ basketball team has a simple game plan for every team it faces.
There are no gimmicks or surprises for coach Vince Layson’s team, and why not? Counting Wednesday night’s 68-39 drubbing of West Hall in the first round of the GHSA Class AAA state tournament, the plan has worked 26 of 26 times.
That strategy involves three main goals: Hit the court running and try to get an early knockout, compete defensively for 32 minutes and, maybe the most important thing, have fun. All were on display as the Yellow Jackets raced to a huge early lead and kept going.
“That’s been our staple all year, to come out and get a quick start so they have to fight from behind the whole game, and we were able to do that again tonight,” Layson said. “We really flourish in transition, so when we can get a couple of deflections and steals it obviously gets us going. It also kind of deflates the other team a bit.
“I just hope we can keep it going another four games.”
