Calhoun rolls into Georgia Class AAA quarterfinals

CALHOUN, Ga. – “Clock in” has been the season-long theme for coach Vince Layson’s Calhoun basketball team.

Saturday night, it was quite apparent Chapin Rierson took his work seriously as he led the Yellow Jackets into the Elite Eight of the Georgia Class AAA playoffs with a 71-43 win over the Westside Seminoles from Macon. Rierson, a 6-foot-5 junior, played what Layson called the “game of his career” as he scored 28 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked three shots.

Calhoun (27-0) will play Friday in Augusta against Jenkins High from Savannah, which beat Jackson County 70-51 on Saturday.

“‘Clock in’ has been our motto all year,” Layson said. “I tell them when you come through these doors to get your time card and clock in. It’s time to go to work. I challenged the guys playing defense and rebounding. They did those things to the best of their ability tonight. I can’t ask for anything else. When they do that, they’re a good team.”

Rierson had a tall task Saturday facing 6-8 Seminoles sophomore Khavon Moore, who came in averaging 21 points per game. But Rierson had 13 points and five rebounds.
