It’s a search that could easily last a lifetime – looking for the perfect method to make grilled cheese, a sandwich that is nothing short of pure joy, particularly this time of year when the temperature plunges and comfort food is in demand. For many, just one bite of a great grilled cheese makes a good day even better.

And here’s one fact that solidly substantiates Americans’ love of the sandwiches: According to Google search results, the average monthly search for “grilled cheese” in the U.S. is 33,100.

“According to the data, the number of online searches increases in the cold months, but grilled cheese sandwiches appear to be popular all year long,” says Anne Cain, registered dietitian and director of communications for the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association.

While we know that crisp, buttery bread of any kind – whether it’s white, wheat, sourdough or French – is best, the question most have is: What kind of cheese is the best?

“Basic American cheese has always been popular, but now that grilled cheese sandwiches are somewhat trendy, you’ll see all kinds of cheeses being used, as well as blends of different types of cheeses,” Cain says.
