A collapsed 25-foot retaining wall at the North Shore Publix is suffering from more than just a cosmetic problem.
Just two months ago, record rainfall caused a seam to split up the middle of the wall, causing employees to block off a portion of the parking lot with shopping carts, but a corporate spokeswoman said the problem wasn’t structural.
Brenda Reid said the stone blocks that make up the wall are only a facade and there is a large steel barrier hidden behind. After a couple of weeks, the damage was patched up and Reid said the wall was reinforced.
But Thursday, again after days of heavy rainfall, the wall split from top to bottom about 10 feet from the original problem, dumping a pile of dirt, stone, and steel in the parking lot.
Now engineers have to figure out the larger problem and make extensive repairs. Reid said the previous reinforcement work may have been what caused the breakthrough.
