Three-year-old boy shot in Apison has died

A 3-year-old boy was shot and killed in Apison just before 9:30 a.m. today, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

The boy was inside his family's vehicle, which was parked outside their home at 4724 Gates Lane, when the shooting happened. Investigators have not said whether the shooting was accidental or intentional, and have not said whether the boy shot himself or was shot by another person.

Investigators also declined to say what type of weapon was used and where the boy was wounded.

Investigators gathered evidence at the home throughout the morning. The neighborhood is quiet and rural, with the home tucked at the bottom of a hilly dirt road.

Neighbors say the family has lived there for several years and that the boy was a lively, active toddler.

The family of the boy declined to speak with the Times Free Press.
