Outgoing Ringgold Mayor Joe Barger talks about 2016 projects

A personal priority

“We will place deceased veterans’ flags on Barger Bridge now,” said Barger. “We will place six American flags 10 feet apart on the bridge to honor deceased veterans. I will have it done for Memorial Day. We put up flags after 1890’s Days. We put up 1,287 this past Veterans Day. I have 17 more ordered, so 1,314 right now. By May, it will be 1,340 flags total.”

Mayor Joe Barger may be retiring, but he still plans to play an active role in the city of Ringgold.

Barger talked about upcoming projects as he exited office and handed over the reins to new Mayor Nick Millwood.

“We are asking for the state of Georgia to pave four streets at 80 percent [cost to the state],” Barger said, referring to a Local Maintenance & Improvement Grant for which the city has applied. “The city of Ringgold will pay 20 percent. We will pave Old County Road at [a cost to the city of] $53,011, Jenkins Street at $6,180, Marilyn Circle at $14,070, Rollins Industrial Court at $29,500, Valley View Drive at $4,300 and Whittemore Street at $5,500.”

The city also plans to extend Candy Lane, he said. The recent change order added $6,731 to the project which will now cost the city $489,204.
