VW global sales fall in 2015

Volkswagen Group delivered 9.93 million vehicles globally in 2015, a 2 percent drop that marked the automaker’s first annual decrease since 2002.

Matthias Mueller, the carmaker’s CEO, said that delivering almost 10 million vehicles is “an excellent result, particularly in view of the continued challenging market situation in some regions as well as the diesel issue in the final quarter of last year.”

He said in a statement that while developments in Brazil and Russia had a noticeable impact on deliveries, it made advances in Europe.

“We also recorded further growth in the North America region and in the USA,” he said. In North America in 2015, it sold over 931,800 vehicles. At 607,100 units – an increase of 1.2 percent – the United States accounted for the lion’s share of the deliveries, the company said.

Mueller said 2016 will be no less challenging.
