Side Orders: It’s Girl Scout cookie season

Beginning Friday and continuing through Feb. 1, Girl Scouts will be selling the cookies that have become ingrained in American culture. And now more than ever, rather than hearing a tap on your door and the familiar: “Would you like to buy some Girl Scout cookies?” you’ll be looking for your email notification.

This is the second year that Scouts have used “Digital Cookie,” a program aimed at furthering the girls’ computer skills. And this year, they’re working to expand the program, according to Sarah Callahan, communications specialist for the Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians, an organization that serves 46 counties in the Chattanooga, Knoxville and Tri-Cities regions.

“Not only does Digital Cookie open the door for more sales, it is an opportunity to learn enhanced marketing skills for the 21st century,” Callahan says. “Girls can set their cookie goals, track their progress, manage orders and inventory, learn Internet safety skills and more, all while they earn age-specific cookie business badges.”

For security, the Scouts only email people they already know, so it’s an invitation-only deal. If you don’t know a Girl Scout, you can purchase cookies at booths that will be in place at area stores, including Walmart, Food City and Lowe’s from Feb. 26 through March 20.

“We’ve been very fortunate to partner with lots of small and large businesses alike,” Callahan says.
