The Chattanooga Bach Choir continues its Cantata Series on Sunday, Jan. 31, when the singers present Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata 114 following an Evensong service at Christ Church Episcopal downtown.

Evensong will begin at 4 p.m., and all former Bach Choir singers are invited to participate in this service in memory of the late Dr. James Greasby, founding director of the Bach Choir. Director David Long said in a news release that Evensong was one of the late musician’s favorite services.

The concert, the third of four short chamber concerts the choir is presenting this season, will immediately follow. Organist Karla Fowkes will play a chorale prelude by Buxtehude featuring the same chorale used in Cantata 114.

Cantata 114 “Wär Gott nicht mit uns diese zeit” means “Were God not with us at this time,” a paraphrase of Psalm 124. Its text is based on a hymn by Martin Luther.
