Fans of s’mores, singalongs and warmth on chilly nights will love the new addition at McCoy Farm and Gardens – a fire pit built by Signal Mountain resident Jake Little.
Little wanted his Eagle Scout project to involve McCoy Farm, and a fire pit perfectly fit his reputation at Boy Scout outings as someone who could always build and start a good blaze, said Kim Fookes, who helped coordinate the project.
“I chose a fire pit because I wanted to do something with my hands, and a fire pit serves as a great place for people to gather,” said Jake. “The McCoy Farm was a convenient place to build a pit, especially since they were already looking to build a fire pit on their property.”
He and fellow Scouts drove two hours to a rock quarry, where they handpicked the stones to surround the fire pit, Fookes said. Jake said the Scouts then spent four days digging the pit and shaping the dirt into a circle, filling the pit with gravel and arranging the stones according to his design.
“While completing the project, I learned that serving your community is important,” he said.
The 16-year-old said he has looked up to the Eagle Scouts in his troop since he joined as a fifth-grader, and the rank was something he wanted to attain and carry with him throughout his life.
