Traffic is at a crawl in both directions on Interstate 75 at the split because of multivehicle crashes in the north and southbound lanes between I-24 and Exit 1.
The southbound crash is in the center and left lanes at the East Ridge exit ramp, and injuries are reported. Traffic is edging by in the right-hand lanes, but the backup extends far back along eastbound I-24.
The northbound crash at mile marker 1 has the left lane blocked, but no injuries are reported.
The Department of Transportation estimates the messes will be cleaned up by around 6 p.m. Meanwhile, motorists are advised to use extra caution and drive slowly.
