Attorneys are working to meet a September trial date for Cortez Sims, the 18-year-old allegedly involved in a quadruple shooting in January 2015.

Two weeks after a 26-year-old mother was gunned down, possibly for testifying against Sims, lawyers today agreed to set his case over to July 21.

Sims’ attorney, Brandy Spurgin, said she has several motions she wants the state to consider then.

She had no immediate comment on today’s proceedings.

Police say Sims burst into a College Hill Courts apartment around 1 a.m. on Jan. 7, 2015, and opened fire.

One bullet connected with 20-year-old Talitha Bowman’s collarbone, causing it to explode and hit her heart. The gunfire wounded two others, including a 1-year-old.

Zoey Duncan, now 2, survived the attack but is paralyzed. Her mother, Bianca Horton, 26, had been a witness in Sims’ case but fared a different fate.

In late May, Horton was found dead on the roadside in the 2100 block of Elder Street, multiple bullet casings on the ground beside her.

So far, prosecutors have declined to comment on what Horton’s role might have been in the case moving forward, or how her death affects Sims’ case.
