The lights had turned green five to six seconds earlier – the turning arrow and the two lanes going straight. The people ahead of me in the turning lane were engrossed in their phones, oblivious to the green arrow and to me beeping frantically behind them.
I went around them in the ditch. Bo Duke couldn’t have done it any better.
Normally, I would have simply groaned and waited, but a phone call just a few moments earlier had me panicking.
My family and I were heading from church toward town for a very late lunch. We were really hungry, then my wife’s phone rang. It was one of her dearest friends, who is also one of our church members. She was four hours away in the hospital with her son. Her daughter was at home and was, in the biblical vernacular, “great with child.”
My wife’s friend was panicking. The daughter had just sent her a text -her water broke. She could not reach her husband at work. And now you know why I went through a ditch to get around whoever it was that did not notice that the light had turned green. Whoever you were, I apologize, but the situation was dire.
