Bachman Community Center is at 2815 Anderson Pike and can be reached at 886-4842, or visit the Bachman website at bachmancc.org.
Registration is now open for Nancie’s Summer Day Camps at Bachman, which include past favorites such as American Girl, Lego and space camps, as well as many new offerings, said Bachman Marketing and Programs Director Ashley Zimmerman.
The camps are held in June and July, and the schedule and camp descriptions are available at Bachman or on its website.
“We’ve been doing the same ones over and over again, and a lot of people on the mountain are offering the same things,” Zimmerman said, referencing the decision to add new camps this year. About 50 percent of this year’s camps are new to Bachman. “People are getting tired of the same things and going off the mountain for camps,” she added.
In the past, the community center has mainly offered camps for elementary school students. This year it is expanding its offerings to include camps for children in middle school, she said.
Other new offerings include a photography camp led by professional photographer Kim Livingood, as well as drama and puppet camps with Colleen Laliberte that were previously held at the MACC.
Several of the new camps are designed to incorporate learning into fun activities, said Zimmerman, giving the science and French camps as examples. Bachman is also offering a brain camp teaching participants about the parts of the brain and how they work, as well as a Web design camp for children age 10 and older.
Since the camps are marketed toward children who are not yet able to drive, she said organizers tried to schedule as many camps as possible back-to-back to allow campers the opportunity to spend the whole day at Bachman.
Parents can register their children for the camps at Bachman or online at the Bachman website, where the fee can be paid using PayPal.
One benefit of the camps at Bachman is their affordability, said Zimmerman. Most camps cost $90, and Zimmerman noted that camp fees go toward camp scholarships for children who would otherwise be unable to afford to attend. Camp directors identify those children by reaching out to local organizations, she explained.
The camps were named and the camp scholarships are given in honor of Nancie Bailey, who was heavily involved in organizing the camps at the community center before she passed away several years ago.
