The 6th Cavalry Museum, 6 Barnhardt Circle in Fort Oglethorpe, will host a reception today, May 12, for the Ridgeland High School art students whose work is included in a companion exhibit with “Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America.”

“Hometown Teams” is a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street program that will be on view through Saturday, June 18.

The students were tasked with creating artwork on the theme “Team Sports.” The 40 mixed-media pieces were created with acrylics and collage on wood panels. Art instructor Erika Couey prepared the students for the project by looking at surrealistic art and talking about composition.

“It’s such a diverse group of art using different mediums, colors and textures to showcase their impression of sports,” she says in a news release.

Thomas Painter took a lighthearted look at sports with his “Golfing Snowmen.” Emma Arthur chronicled her softball career at Ridgeland with her piece “Emma Art,” including tag lines from newspaper sports pages. Christina Smith brought popular sports together with a modern mosaic of a player. Trinity Buckner used her piece, “A Day at the Stadium,” to remember the sights and sounds of the game. Alli Massey focused “Title IX” on the advances made by women’s sports since 1972.

Today’s reception, scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m., coincides with a Business After Hours social for the Catoosa and Walker County chambers.

“Hometown Teams” may be viewed free of charge from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Schools, day cares, senior and church groups can call 706-861-2860 or email chris@6thcavalrymuseum.com to schedule a tour.
