TRION, Ga. – The message Trion coach Jason Lanham wanted to get across to his baseball team was one part congratulatory and one part motivational.
The Bulldogs had just completed an improbable doubleheader sweep at Charlton County in the GHSA Class A public school semifinals, and Lanham wanted to make sure his jubilant players understood there is still work to be done.
“We are walking on water right now,” Lanham said Tuesday, the day after 8-2 and 6-4 wins against Charlton County, which hadn’t lost a game at home in more than a year and had won two of the past three Class A public titles.
“I’m very proud of our guys for coming back in both games. I knew I had a special group of guys, and what they did this week is a testament to that. We met the challenge and now we have to meet it again. I know these guys aren’t satisfied with just getting there. We are going to make sure of that.”
Trion (24-5), the tournament’s No. 6 seed, will hit the road again to face another surprising team in the championship round in south Georgia. Treutlen County (26-5), the No. 4 seed, upset top-seeded Schley County in the semis and will host Trion in a best-of-three series starting with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. If necessary, a third game would be played at 4 p.m. Monday.
