After-school program targets at-risk youth

The Northwest Georgia Community of Hope After School Teen Club recently launched in Fort Oglethorpe to offer free after-school activities for at-risk teens.

“Personally, right now we are targeting Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School, Lakeview Middle School and the Performance Learning Center,” said Communities in Schools Executive Director Suzanne Chovanec.

“We will let the program grow as soon as we are able to let it grow,” she said, explaining that more schools can enroll as more volunteers step up to help. “We are pulling our resources together to make this happen.”

A confidential list of female and male students age 12-18 who are considered at-risk during the after-school hours will be compiled by Communities in Schools, Young America Ministries and Catoosa County Public Schools, who are also partnering with One Life Ministry and North Georgia Community YMCA for the program.

Students interested in participating should communicate that interest to their middle or high school site Communities in Schools coordinator, said Chovanec.
