Thanksgiving is a holiday of great friends and great food – and lots of it. What better way to prevent putting on a few pounds than running a 5k that morning?
That’s exactly what organizers of the fourth annual Stuffing Strut hope locals will do by participating in the 5k walk/run at Chester Frost Park. In the spirit of the holiday, proceeds will be going toward numerous organizations in the North Hamilton area.
Last year the Stuffing Strut made $21,000 for the local community.
Registration costs are $30 for adults and $10 for kids age 12 and younger. Shirts are only guaranteed to racers who pre-register, which ends Nov. 14.
The groups set to benefit from the 5k are the Northside Neighborhood House, the Jim Wilson Fund at Soddy-Daisy Middle School, the Soddy-Daisy Food Bank and the Dallas Bay Volunteer Firefighters. Event organizer Sandy Weeks said each Strut has surpassed the last, and she’s hopeful the upcoming race will continue that trend.
“Our sponsors are up this year, and we had about 300 runners last year,” she said. “We’re really hoping for 400 this year, which would put us way over last year’s total.”
In addition to the registration fees, Strut organizers are encouraging all attendees to bring nonperishable canned goods to benefit the Soddy-Daisy Food Bank.
“There’s so many more people in need this time of year,” said Weeks. “Hopefully, we can help them [the food bank] get through Christmas with enough food for everyone.”
New for this year’s Strut is a timer that will be able to accurately record the times of those choosing to run the 5k. People pre-registering will have to indicate whether they want to run or walk the race.
Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and elves will be making an appearance, and music and raffle items will be other highlights of the event.
The Strut began after Dallas Bay Baptist Church Pastor Ken Duggan and members of the congregation ran in the annual Grateful Gobbler 5k in Coolidge Park. The church thought a similar event dedicated to the community north of the river would be beneficial. Initially, it was run and organized by the church, but has since grown to become an independent nonprofit.
