Samford bringing different challenge for UTC defense

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga defense has faced three pretty basic offenses so far in the 2016 football season.

That changes Saturday.

Samford and its high-powered attack come to Finley Stadium for a Southern Conference matchup with the third-ranked Mocs (3-0, 1-0). Game time is set for 2 p.m.

The Bulldogs (2-0, 0-0) have the top-ranked scoring offense in the country at 56 points per game. Those stats were inflated by a 77-7 victory over NCAA Division II opponent Mars Hill – much like some of the Mocs’ stats aided by playing DII Shorter – but the UTC coaching staff and players know the Bulldogs, under the direction of second-year head coach Chris Hatcher and his well-known “Hatch Attack,” can put points on the board in a hurry.

“There are things we have to do,” UTC coach Russ Huesman said. “We need to tackle in space, and if you don’t do that against teams that spread it out and throw screens, they’ll get some yards on you. You have to limit the points as much as you can. You have to say limit points and create turnovers, and especially we have to get them on the ground and tackle well.”
