For the second year in a row, taxpayers are getting three extra days to file their tax returns from the previous year due to the calendar and holiday celebration of Emancipation Day on Monday in Washington D.C.

But as the annual crunch time for filing taxes approaches next Tuesday, April 18th, low-income and senior taxpayers can still get free help filling out their returns this week at a number of VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites.

The IRS discourages taxpayers from choosing not to file their tax returns on time, potentially levying a 5 percent penalty for every month that your returns are late if you owe money.
