Local organizations to host public reception for new schools superintendent

The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga, Chattanooga 2.0 and Unifi-Ed will host a welcome reception for new Hamilton County Superintendent Bryan Johnson. The reception, which is open to the public, will be from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, 200 E. M.L. King Blvd.

Johnson will discuss his vision for the Hamilton County Department of Education in the upcoming years, according to a news release from the Urban League.

In June, the Hamilton County Board of Education voted 5-4 to name 34-year-old Johnson as the district’s permanent superintendent. He will be the fourth permanent superintendent to lead the merged city-county school system.

For the last decade, Johnson worked in Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools, the seventh-largest Tennessee school district, located north of Nashville. He started his career teaching and coaching in the school system and was promoted through the ranks and named chief academic officer in 2015.
