5-at-10: Weekend winners, losers, Protesting on the rise, Rushmore of Steve Martin

Weekend winners

Justin Thomas. Dude was aces Sunday, and in truth made the biggest bogey of the season. After a nerve-filled opening hole that started with a monster drive that powered into the fairway bunker and led to Thomas spraying it around the yard like he was in a Sunday group at Signal. Then, he drained a 20-plus footer for a bogey 5 that felt like a birdie in some respects. He closed in style – he was 4 under on his last 12 holes – for his first major.

Washington Nationals. Hey, when we woke up Sunday, everyone this side of everyone thought star slugger Bryce Harper was done for this year and some of next after slipping and falling on first base. It was that bad. But news came Sunday evening that it’s just a bone bruise, and the Nationals, who are really the biggest hurdle for the Dodgers in either league, can breathe a little easier. Here’s the Washington Post report.

High school football fans. The jamborees were last weekend. The season starts Friday. It’s here. It’s all happening.

The Red Sox. Boston took two of three in the Bronx, and ace Chris Sale looked the part of legit No. 1 starter on Sunday. The Red Sox lead the AL East over New York by 5.5 games now.
