Celebrate Christmas Eve hearing the story of the birth of Christ through scripture and song when a service of “Nine Lessons and Carols” is presented Sunday, Dec. 24, at 5:30 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, 700 Pine St.
The Rev. Dr. Michael Phoenix will preside over the free, one-hour service featuring readings alternating with anthems sung by the Chancel Choir and Christmas carols sung by the congregation.
The Chancel Choir is comprised of church members and alumni from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Chattanooga Singers and Chamber Singers. The organist is David Friberg.
“This service has become one of the most popular services of the season,” says Dr. Kevin Ford, UTC Director of Choral Activities and director of Second Presbyterian Chancel Choir.
Anthems that will be sung include “Climb to the Top of the Highest Mountain” by Carolyn Jennings, which will feature the children’s choir; “Ave Maria” by Rachmaninoff, “Coventry Carol” arranged by Dale Warland and “Softly” by contemporary British composer and jazz pianist Will Todd. The service will conclude with a candlelight singing of “Silent Night.”
