Walker County, Polk County latest districts to cancel school for rest of week

Walker County and Polk County Schools administrators announced classes are cancelled through the rest of the week.

The two join other school systems in the tri-state region that are shuttering their doors because of a flu bug.

“We are experiencing difficulties finding coverage for our classroom teachers as well as our bus drivers and attendants,” an employee wrote on the Facebook page. “This has created a supervision concern in our school buildings as we have taxed the availability of our current substitute teacher list.”

In Tennessee, the school systems for Bradley County, Cleveland, Marion County, McMinn County and Polk County already announced they were closed for the rest of the week.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reports of the flu seemed to peak around the end of January. Tennessee was one of the hardest hit states.

In its Facebook post, a school administrator said some bus drivers have fallen ill, making it difficult to pick up and drop off students.

“The safety of our students is always our number one priority,” the post reads. “We hope this separation from one another will allow for proper care and wellness for all students and adults.”
