Five Central High School students celebrated the end of bowling season by securing spaces on the competitive All-District teams.

Three boys – senior Blake Morris, sophomore Markus Holland and freshman Noah Cruz – made the cut after hitting season averages above 200. A perfect score is 300.

From the girls team, seniors Jordan Key and Catherine Kesckes were selected as well due to their averages and season-high scores.

“Last year we didn’t win a single match,” coach Edward Potter said of the boys team, adding that there weren’t even enough girls to create a team for the 2015-2016 season. “… We had some kids who put up exceptional averages this year.”

And, Potter added, for this 2016-2017 year, the girls played resolutely all season even though they were at a group disadvantage with only five players.

“It would have been really easy for them to walk away,” he said. “I’m really proud of them.”

LaNetta Holland, Markus’ mother, said her son has been bowling since he was 5 years old.

“… We come from a family of big league bowlers, so he had to learn how to bowl if he wanted to play with the bigger kids in the family,” she said.

Now, Markus and his fellow students are receiving scholarship opportunities due to their talents.

“It’s very rewarding,” his mother said. “It’s not like a traditional sport; you can’t just jump into it like a field sport.”
