Solid starts for English, Jaeger

Former Baylor School golfers Harris English and Stephan Jaeger didn’t miss out on being part of a record-setting day for under-par first rounds at the U.S. Open. Each shot 1-under 71 and were among those tied for 29th after Thursday’s competition at Erin Hills, six strokes off the lead but in good position in the 156-player field. English, who had an afternoon tee time and played the holes in order, opened with a bogey on the par-5 No. 1 and bogeyed the par-4 15th, but the University of Georgia alum also made three birdies. Jaeger, who played at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, was a morning starter who went off on No. 10, and he offset bogeys on 12, 17 and 6 with birdies on 14, 18, 1 and 2. English is playing the U.S. Open for the third time in four years, having made the cut in 2014 (when he tied for 48th) and 2016 (when he tied for 37th). He played in all four majors last year and advanced to the weekend each time. Jaeger is playing the U.S. Open (and a major tournament) for the second time; he missed the cut in 2015.
