Sushi-Wan Kenobi – Sushi, for short – is the newest member of the Wagner household. He is a betta fish, about an inch long and roughly the color of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s robe.
My son came home with him a few weeks ago as a gift from a school event. He was in a glass globe slightly smaller than a baseball. We quickly upgraded his piscine palace to a larger, filtered tank.
Sushi does not do much, as far as I can tell. We feed him fish pellets in the morning and at night. Sometimes he devours them; sometimes he seems to regard them as beneath his notice.
To be fair, Sushi is missing a few things that would perhaps help him to be more productive in life: things like hands, feet and opposable thumbs. Still, he is a pretty cool fish and quite peaceful to watch.
My son first suggested the name Sushi, and everyone else quickly and enthusiastically agreed. True, most families might have picked something a touch less macabre – Finley or Gill, perhaps – but we gravitate toward the unusual.
