Gold medal boondoggle
Great column here from Yahoo!Sports ace Dan Wetzel on the complete disaster the Rio Games have become.
In truth, the fears we had heading into last year’s Summer Olympics in Rio largely proved to be unfounded. Yes, the open-water swimming was gross, but the potential viruses and concerns about terrorism and crime thankfully did not come to pass. Other than Ryan Lochte getting drunk, peeing at a gas station and then lying about it, it was athletics as usual for the most part.
Well, as Wetzel points out, the true tragedy is in the leftovers.
The facilities are rotting. The city and its people are out the $12 billion it cost to build, renovate, bid for and host the games, and what will they have to show or it?
