The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Chloe Arnold was selected as the Southern Conference women’s soccer freshman of the year, announced Tuesday by the league office.

In addition, sophomore forward Jordan Mueller was named to the all-league second team. Mueller had five goals and three assists, including the game-winner in UTC’s overtime win over Wofford.

Arnold led the Mocs in goals with seven and had a hat trick in their league win over The Citadel. She became the first UTC player to receive the top-freshman honor, as well as the fifth since 2009 to be named to the league all-freshman team.

“Any individual award that you get, it takes a good team performance for good individual performances to come through,” UTC coach Gavin McKinney said. “Obviously it shows that the program is headed in the right direction when you receive individual awards.”

The Mocs’ 2017 season ended at 5-10-4 in a 2-0 loss to UNC Greensboro in a SoCon tournament quarterfinal last weekend.

Men’s golfers third

The UTC men’s golf team placed third in the East Bay Deli Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C.

The Mocs were led by Lake Johnson, the former Chattanooga Christian standout who shot an even-par 216 for the three-day event, with 69-68 the final two days. He was third in the medalist standings. Luke Long shot 222 to tie for eighth, Andrew Weathers tied for 21st at 225 and two Mocs playing as individuals, Will Porter and Oliver Simonsen, tied for 25th and 33rd at 227 and 229.

Tennessee won the even with a 873, while Jacksonville State finished three strokes ahead of UTC.

The women’s team finished 10th in the Trinity Forest Invitational on Tuesday with a 54-hole total of 923, which was one ahead of Campbell and four in front of 22nd-ranked UNLV.

Megan Woods and Cristina Perez carded 15-over 231s for the tournament, sharing 30th place. Monica San Juan was two strokes behind for a 37th-place finish.

It was the program’s first win over a top-25 team since placing second in the Palmetto Intercollegiate in October 2015, when the Mocs defeated 23rd-ranked Louisville by seven strokes.
