Political Notebook: Moms to meet against guns

Rep. Allen West to speak here Monday

Former U.S. Rep. and frequent Fox News commentator Allen West will be the guest speaker Monday night at the annual Hamilton County GOP Majority Keepers fundraiser.

“The Hamilton County Republican Party is honored to have such a dynamic conservative speaker for our Majority Keepers event this year,” county party chairman Marsha Yessick said on the party’s website.

“Not only is he a distinguished veteran and great American, West has been a leading voice for Republicans to unite behind what he calls ‘constitutional conservatism’ rather than following the political establishment on the key issues facing our country today.”

The retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel also is a contributing columnist for Townhall.com and author of “Guardian of the Republic: An American Ronin’s Journey to Family, Faith and Freedom.” He is the former executive director of the National Center for Policy Analysis in Dallas.

The dinner begins at 6 p.m. at The Walden Club. Tickets are $125 for general admission or $500 per couple, which includes admission to the VIP reception at 5 p.m.

To purchase tickets, email hcgop@hcgop.com or call 423-266-9351.

Breakfast will be served and training starts at 10 a.m. People are asked to bring laptops to the meeting, or bring paper and pencil to take notes.

Rep. Tom Graves votes for whistleblower bill

U.S. Rep. Tom Graves, R-Ga., said he voted last week for a bill to protect people who blow the whistle on government mismanagement, waste or abuse.

Graves said he voted for Dr. Chris Kirkpatrick Whistleblower Protection Act, which was sent to the president’s desk. The bill incorporates stronger whistleblower protections, increases awareness of whistleblower protections and requires punishment of supervisors who retaliate against whistleblowers, Graves said in a news release.

“The American people should be able to trust that public servants can speak out if their coworkers are not acting ethically and honestly,” Graves said in the release.

The bill is named after Dr. Chris Kirkpatrick, a clinical psychologist at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Kirkpatrick was reprimanded after reporting some of his patients were too drugged to treat and was fired after reporting a patient threatened him, Graves said.

A VA investigation later found his concerns were justified, but only after Kirkpatrick committed suicide.
