ATLANTA (AP) – A former police officer in Georgia has been convicted of charges he took money in exchange for providing information from a law enforcement database.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Monday that a federal jury in Atlanta convicted former Cumming Police Sergeant Nathan VanBuren of wire fraud and computer fraud charges.

A sentencing date hasn’t been scheduled.

Prosecutors say the 35-year-old VanBuren took bribes from someone he arrested in 2015.

Officials say VanBuren asked the arrestee for a loan, falsely claiming his wages were being garnished and his son had expensive medical bills.
