Anti-smoking push draws honor

CHATTANOOGA – The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department has been recognized by the state as one of the top five counties to reduce the smoking rate among pregnant women.

In 2015, 11.1 percent of pregnant women in the county reported smoking during their pregnancy, compared to 12.5 percent in 2014, according to a news release from public health officials.

The health department offers Baby and Me Tobacco Free, a free program open to pregnant women of any age in Hamilton County who smoke or who quit within three months before becoming pregnant. Participants who stay tobacco-free can receive vouchers for free diapers.

For more information about the Baby and Me Tobacco Free program or to register, call 423-209-8320 or visit health. hamiltontn.org.
