Tennessee ran into the South Carolina baseball team at the wrong time this weekend.

The Gamecocks were swept by Georgia last weekend, falling to 1-5 in Southeastern Conference play as they prepared to host the Volunteers in a three-game series at Founders Park in Columbia, S.C.

South Carolina got its season back on track by sweeping Tennessee with a 6-1 win on Thursday, a 6-2 win on Friday and a 6-3 win on Saturday.

Tennessee (17-12, 4-5) left 21 runners on base over the three games, though freshman designated hitter Evan Russell continued to impress with a hit in all three games.

The Vols led Saturday’s finale 3-1 before the Gamecocks (17-11) surged ahead after starting pitcher Will Neely exited. South Carolina touched reliever Zach Linginfelter for three earned runs in two innings. Linginfelter took the loss for Tennessee, dropping his record to 2-2.

Tennessee hosts Belmont on Tuesday before Florida visits for a three-game series next weekend.
