Tennessee Lt. Gov. Randy McNally has endorsed incumbent Eric Watson in the Bradley County sheriff’s race, according to a news release from Watson’s campaign.

McNally said in the release: “As a state representative, Eric stood against the criminal element in our society, he assembled a Record on Public Safety and Crime that is second to none.”

“Eric took a lead role in the fight against [methamphetamine] in our state and also sponsored legislation in our schools to make sure our children are safe. I look forward to his continued good work as Sheriff for the people of Bradley County.”

McNally, a longtime state senator, was elected lieutenant governor by his peers in January of 2017 and serves as Senate speaker. He represents the 5th Senate District, which includes Anderson County, Loudon County, Monroe County and part of Knox County.

Watson said he is “humbly honored to receive this important endorsement.” He said he has known McNally for many years and “admires what he has been able to get done for the people across the state of Tennessee.”

Watson represented House District 22 in the Tennessee General Assembly from 2006 to 2016, when he was elected sheriff.

Watson faces a challenge in the Republican primary from Steve Lawson, who headed the department’s criminal investigation division before resigning to run against his former boss. No Democrat is seeking the seat.

Lawson has been endorsed by the four living former sheriffs – Jim Ruth, Tim Gobble, Dan Gilley and Robert Lawson – as well as Cleveland Police Chief Mark Gibson and the local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Early voting in the sheriff’s race and other county races is April 11-26, and the election is May 1.
