A Cleveland High School basketball player was arrested Friday after a video of him beating his former girlfriend was referred to Bradley County Sheriff’s Office.

The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office says Dionte Ware, 18, is the man shown in the July 5 video standing over and beating a 16-year-old girl in the head and body.

Investigators met with the victim and the person who allegedly took the video to corroborate what is shown. Based on that information, deputies decided to charge Ware with one count of domestic assault.

Ware is currently being held at the Bradley County Jail with no bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 26.

It’s not clear if Ware is one of the basketball players who were recently suspended after allegedly breaking curfew and engaging in sexual contact during a trip to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for a tournament.

Those students received a five-day out-of-school suspension. The school’s Activity Council also handed down sanctions ranging from two game suspensions to complete dismissal from the basketball team.

The school did not offer more information about the students’ discipline, citing federal student privacy laws.
