Hamilton County Schools and Marion County Schools have joined the list of schools closing Friday because of illnesses. Marion County Schools will also be closed Monday.

The Hamilton County Board of Education announced that the number of staff and students out because of illness has spread to a larger percentage of schools and as a result, Hamilton County Schools will close Friday and all child care is canceled for school-age children. All sporting activities scheduled for today and over the weekend will continue as scheduled.

“We have watched absence numbers very closely for the past few weeks and student safety has been our number one concern since the flu outbreak hit our community,” said Dr. Bryan Johnson, superintendent of Hamilton County Schools. “The absence numbers due to the illness of teachers and bus drivers combined is now significantly impacting our ability to open and operate the schools for children.”

Our news partner WRCB previously reported that Etowah City School and Rhea County Schools will be closed through Friday.

Polk County Schools will be closed Friday and Monday.

School officials in Polk County on Wednesday called off classes because of illness among students, teachers and staff.

“We will try to have school as usual on Thursday,” Assistant Director Joel Cox said on Wednesday. “But students who are not feeling well today or tonight should probably go ahead and stay home.”
