Blackburn should be worried about Bredesen
So here comes the big money. Sen. Mitch McConnell and the RNC are spending more than $4 million to prop up Rep. Marsha Blackburn’s campaign against former Gov. Phil Bredesen for Tennessee’s U.S. Senate seat. They’re worried.
Blackburn, sounding more Trumpian and divisive every day and toting baggage from co-sponsoring a bill easing DEA oversight and enforcement of pharmaceutical companies’ distribution of opioids, desperately needs the Republican Party to throw her a lifeline.
Bredesen has garnered much respect from Tennesseans, bringing a much-needed statesmanship from his experience as two-term governor and former Nashville mayor. He has and will have a moderate approach to politics, working across party lines to find solutions to problems. Urban, suburban and rural constituents have found him to be knowledgeable, proactive and fair. Bredesen is not an ideologue bound to party dogma.
Tennessee is a conservative red state in today’s party labels. But what we need now is a senator who sees all sides of a debate and will represent all of us, not just those of a single party. And, frankly, we need some sanity in our politics. Bredesen will help return us there sooner than later.
