Chip Baker’s voice needed for county

Chip Baker is the right choice because he is a strong supporter of public education. Signal Mountain residents had been dreaming of a high school for 50 years. Chip played a pivotal role in bringing all the necessary parties together to make it happen.

His 12 years of experience working hard for District 2 as our school board representative also have given him the inside track on how best to work with the current board in accomplishing goals that continue to support improving and funding education in Hamilton County.

Chip has a proven track record of success. With 19 years as director of Chattanooga’s Riverbend Festival, he brings leadership skills necessary for continued economic growth. Chip and his team manage multiple moving parts to bring more than 650,000 people to our city over nine days annually. This proves he has a long-standing commitment to Chattanooga’s success.

Chip listens to his constituents, addresses problems, engages the community and allows everyone a seat at the table while working to find the best possible solution. Chip Baker is the best qualified candidate. With 26 years of connections, both in and outside of Chattanooga, we need his voice.

District 3 lucky to have Martin

The residents of District 3 in Hamilton County are fortunate to have had Greg Martin as our county commissioner since 2016.

Greg Martin served District 3 as the representative on the Hamilton County school board from March of 2012 to November of 2016. Greg and his family have attended the schools in District 3 of Hamilton County, and Martin’s wife, Sheila, is a teacher in the public schools of Hamilton County.

Greg has been active in all areas of the community, including churches, schools and civic activities. He is a great listener and shares the beliefs of his constituents with the county commission and is a great steward of our county finances.

I urge all citizens in District 3 to support and vote to keep Greg Martin our Hamilton County commissioner.

GOP, Elizabeth Baker
is the better choice

My fellow Republicans of District 2, I have good news for you. We have a citizen who has been working for us at local and state levels to protect our county assets (fighting the Gardenhire bill), ensuring our children have opportunities of public education (fighting for the rights of the students on Walden’s Ridge to not be excluded from their county school on Signal Mountain ) and attending county meetings to stay abreast on the issues the county faces.

This citizen, Elizabeth Baker, is now asking to continue her work for us as our county commissioner. Elizabeth will accept the position as her full-time job and will continue to serve us with focused integrity. She has not taken any campaign contributions or endorsements from any person or business that would financially benefit from her service as commissioner.

I will profess my devotion to my county, knowing she is the better candidate for this position, and vote for Elizabeth to represent us all. I am not leaving the Republican Party, but I want a strong, healthy county government.

Please do a great act for us all and vote for Elizabeth Baker.

Gorman fresh face for District 3 voters

As the election approaches and early voting is currently going on, I can wholeheartedly encourage everyone to vote for a fresh new face for county commissioner, Rosabelle Gorman. She has experience with District 3 and will bring a new point of view to old issues.

As a women, mother, former business owner and Realtor, she is knowledgeable and up to date on all the issues facing Hixson and District 3. Her enthusiasm for our community is palpable, and she will be more than an asset in representing all the people within our borders.

We need Rosabelle Gorman to serve as commissioner.

Voter needs a reason to support, not oppose

Just a note to all the candidates running for political office: Please give me a reason to vote for you.

I am so tired of these politicians giving me reason to vote against someone else.

I am waiting.

Another shooting: Nobody’s looking

About the recent shooting outside that Cowart street bar, the police have shirked duty, saying security is not their responsibility. How much more money and gadgets and cool cars and glittery union contracts do we have to throw at them before they accept that they actually have to do their jobs and innovate their policing?

The bar, in turn, blamed Republic Parking, which, as it does, apparently said nothing. It’s a behemoth with an altogether inappropriate, monopolistic relationship with the city that markets its radical oversupply of pavement at cartoonishly inflated prices.

Meanwhile we can be proud that the Democratic mayor’s Twitter account says he’s doing “something something violence reduction something.” Great.

It’s no wonder Wallethub rated Chattanooga’s government below that of Flint, Michigan, a city famous for intentionally allowing its people to be poisoned for political gain and federal dollars.

And where are the Republicans? Saving us? No. Opening a new headquarters in which they will, presumably, continue their disconnected, big-hat, tea time social giggles. Ridiculous.

We need Jenny Hill on the school board

I believe that Jenny Hill is the best candidate for the District 6 school board seat. Having had the privilege to speak directly with Jenny on issues pertaining to education in Hamilton County, I believe that she has a compelling vision for the steps needed to move education forward in the coming years and the ability to execute on that vision.

Specific positions that resonate with me:

» She recognizes that there are distinct haves and have-nots in our current system and is not OK with that. Things will have to be done by all of us in order to change this, and Jenny is ready to start.

» She and her husband operate a successful business that they started 17 years ago. This says a lot about dedication and the ability to execute on a vision.

» She realizes we should do all we can to lift each and every student to their highest potential. For Jenny, this applies not only to mainstream students but to all students – particularly for those with disabilities.

Please join me in supporting Jenny Hill for school board and getting started on creating the next great chapter of our Chattanooga legacy.

Was front-page photo a deliberate slight?

I was very annoyed at the picture of the woman holding a sign (on the front page of last Wednesday’s paper).

Was this a not-so-subtle way of complaining about the president?

He knows what he is doing, unlike the woman holding the sign.
