An elderly woman suffered a minor burn in a kitchen fire Tuesday afternoon, according to the Chattanooga Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to the house in the 1300 block of Vance Road just after 1 p.m. and were able to put the fire out quickly, according to a news release.

The woman who lived there told firefighters she was cooking and went to the garage for something. When she returned the kitchen was on fire. She tried to put the fire out herself but was unsuccessful.

The woman was checked out by paramedics but declined to be taken to a hospital.

The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental, from food being left unattended on the stove. The woman will have to stay elsewhere until repairs to the house are made.
