As the academic year winds down, spring concert season shows no sign of slowing at four area colleges and universities.

The following concerts are free and open to the public.

* When: 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 19

The Chattanooga State Concert Choir’s program includes performances by Chattanooga State students and faculty.

Catch The Groove

* Where: Music Annex Building, 825 McCallie Ave.

* When: 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 22

The UTC Percussion Ensemble will present its annual Catch the Groove concert in a new location: the Music Annex, which formerly housed Art Accent.

The annex is a white building with a striped awning and a big gold C on the front glass, but no other signage. Concertgoers will get to help choose the name for the new facility. Between pieces, the ensemble will take suggestions before the named is voted on.

Works by Neil DePonte and new percussion composer Tetsuya Takeno will be performed. The program will feature a guest appearance by UTC alumnus Orinzie Mitchell on timpani.

Spring Symphony Concert

* Where: Collegedale Church of Seventh-day Adventists, 4829 College Drive East, Collegedale

* When: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23

Southern Adventist University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Laurie Redmer Minner, will perform Richard Wagner’s Overture to Tannhauser, Felix Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E minor, op. 64, and Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 in D minor, op. 120.

The concert will feature Daniel Esperante, senior music performance major, as a student conductor, and Geoffrey Herd, violin lecturer from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, as guest soloist. Herd is the founder and director of the Geneva Music Festival in New York and is currently a doctoral candidate at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.

Wind Ensemble

* Where: Lee University, Conn Center, 150 11th St. NE, Cleveland, Tennessee

* When: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23

The Lee University Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. David Holsinger, will re-create Wind Ensemble’s inaugural concert of October 1999.

“The first concert was a military band-length performance, which included an intermission, something the School of Music Dean was very skeptical of,” says Holsinger. “He was sure everyone would leave at the break and not return.

“To my relief, everyone came back and the concert was a striking success, especially to the young musicians themselves,” Holsinger continues. “So much so, that we gained nine new players by the second concert of the semester.”

Tuesday’s concert will include “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Symphony No. 3 by Vittorio Giannini, “Nobles of the Mystic Shrine” by John Philip Sousa, “Mock Morris” by Percy Grainger and “Abram’s Pursuit” and “Scootin’ on Hardrock” by Holsinger.
