THIS WEEK IN EDUCATION NEWS

The Howard School has seen an increasing shift in demographics in recent years.

The once predominantly African American school is now about 48% Latino. Of the about 500 Latino/Hispanic students at the school, about 330 are English-language learners.

They are students including Militza and Mycol, who are enrolled in the school’s NewComer Academy program – a program designed to support and help students who are new to the United States and speak little English transition to their new school and new lives.

The NewComer Academy needs more teachers to serve more students, and three new positions are included in Superintendent Bryan Johnson’s proposed budget for the next school year.
