Area sports notes: Buddy Gross takes lead in FLW's Toho tournament

Buddy Gross of Chickamauga, Georgia, zoomed from fifth place to first in the third round of the FLW Tour bass tournament on Lake Toho in central Florida. Gross leads the 10 finalists going for the $125,000 top prize with 62 pounds after weighing a five-fish limit totaling 19 pounds, 12 ounces Saturday. Darrell Davis of Dover, Florida, went even bigger at 25-12 and moved from 13th to second at 60-15 - 12 ounces more than third-place Josh Douglas of Minnesota.

Track & Field

» The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Kennedy Thomson won the women's mile Friday at the Samford Bulldog Invitational indoor track and field meet by 4.6 seconds in a personal-best and meet-record 4:48.69, and Saturday she set a program record in winning the 800-meter run in 2:10.73. Teammate Abby Bateman was sixth. The Mocs' Makenzie Jones also set a meet record with a 17:25.68 in the 5000, with Hannah Caldwell third and Sophia Neglia sixth; Nicole Buehrle was fourth in the open mile; and Emily Poole was seventh in the 3000 and eighth in the 1000.

Tennis

» The UTC men's tennis team beat Belmont 5-2 Saturday at Baylor School with doubles and singles wins by Niklas Gerdes, Tomas Rodriguez and Pablo Llebeili and another singles victory by Simon Bustamante. Jacob Marshall teamed with Llebeili in doubles for the Mocs (3-3), who play at UNC Asheville today.

Baseball

» Lee University is 3-4 in baseball after losing 12-2 and 9-7 at 23rd-ranked Saint Leo on Saturday. Miguel Pimentel homered for Lee in game one and was 2-for-4 in the series finale, when Alan Smith was 2-for-4 with two walks, an RBI and four runs scored and Keyshaun Smith also had two hits and matched Joshua Perez with two RBIs.

» Covenant bounced back from a season-opening loss Friday at Oglethorpe by edging the Stormy Petrels twice at home Saturday, 4-3 and 11-9. All the runs in the first game for both teams came in the extra eighth inning, pinch hitter Jonah Carignan doubling in three for the Scots. Brett Kernodle was 3-for-4 and starting pitcher Andrew Cline struck out nine batters in his 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Tyler Moore and Brooks DuBose each was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Trevor Grapenthin was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in game two, when John Mitchell was 2-for-3 with two runs for Covenant. DuBose tripled and doubled and Moore doubled twice.

» Sewanee rose to 2-0 in the season-opening Huntingdon Firehouse Classic with an 8-0 win over Berea. Dalton Buckingham allowed three hits struck out five batters in his five innings, and Carter Huffman homered and doubled and batted in three Tigers runs. Max Murray had a two-run triple.

» Bryan College went 3-1 in its weekend series against visiting Madonna with 6-4 and 5-4 wins Saturday. The final victory came on Parker Cosby's eighth-inning single plating Gabe Howell, who was 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Tyler Scott scored the other two. Lake Burris had three RBIs in game one, when the Lions scored two runs in the first inning and four in the fourth and held on.
