A body found Saturday afternoon in South Chickamauga Creek near Graysville Road has been identified as that of a 30-year-old Ringgold, Georgia man, according to a news release.

Catoosa County Sheriff Gary Sisk said in the release that the body of Matthew Edward Scruggs, of an Arnold Circle address in Ringgold, was discovered at about 12:50 p.m. Saturday.

The sheriff said that on Wednesday, May 22, Scruggs drove a vehicle that he was looking to purchase to the old Tri State Steel and Drum property to go fishing. That vehicle later was located on that property by sheriff’s office personnel, Sisk said.

A family member reported Scruggs missing on Saturday evening after the body had been discovered.

The body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations’ crime lab for an autopsy expected to be performed Tuesday.

The official cause of death is undetermined, and there were no obvious signs of injury, the sheriff said.
