THIS WEEK IN EDUCATION NEWS

School security officers, student discipline problems, ongoing litigation between Hamilton County and the state, new positions and updated board policies.

The Hamilton County Board of Education has a lot on its plate this week. All of the items listed above – and more – are on Thursday’s board meeting agenda.

Board members already met to discuss discipline, student behavior issues and pull some agenda items Monday, but expect to hear more from them this week.

In other news, Hamilton County students and teachers return to class this week after a week-long fall break. Some local college students spent time inspecting local residents’ cars and some high school students might have celebrated news about the ACT, one of the most common college admissions tests, that recently released several changes.

Tennessee Education Commissioner Penny Schwinn will be in town later this week for the College Goal TN Conference at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, hosted in part by the Public Education Foundation, or PEF.

The PEF will also be celebrating its annual Teacherpreneur event on Sunday, Oct. 20, recognizing local teachers as they pitch their innovative ideas.
