This Sunday, the Ironman triathlon returns to Chattanooga. At sunup, the endurance event begins with a 2.4-mile swim, followed by a 116-mile bike ride, ending in a 26.2-mile run. The mostly downtown course totals 140.3 miles, which takes the average triathlete about 12 hours, 35 minutes to complete.

Crazy, right? Well, did you know that double Ironman-distance events also exist, totaling 281.2 miles? Or, for the totally insane there is the triple deca ultratriathlon, which is 30 Ironman-distance events in 30 days – totaling 4,251 miles.

Suddenly, 140.3 miles doesn’t seem so bad, does it? Anyway, here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Ironman, including a spectator guide.
