THIS WEEK IN EDUCATION NEWS
Students and teachers at 20 schools in Hamilton County soon will receive free band instruments and training for teachers, thanks to new partnership with the Little Kids Rock Modern Band Instrument Program.
The partnership was announced last week at Brainerd High School – in part, thanks to support from the Nancy Lackey Community Education Fund and Chattanooga native rapper Usher Raymond.
Named for Raymond’s grandmother, the Nancy Lackey Community Education Fund was established to support music and arts education in Chattanooga.
“When she was little, she wanted to be a dancer,” fund chief operating officer Julie Sanders said of Lackey. “But a teacher told her, ‘You can’t do that.’ So she always made sure that kids around her had the opportunities that she never had.”
Also, the Times Free Press hosted its annual Regional Spelling Bee this weekend. An eighth grader from Baylor School took first place and will advance to the National Spelling Bee in May in Washington, D.C.
